ACT has been shown to be an effective treatment for a broad range of psychological problems, such as stress and worry, depression, anxiety problems, post-traumatic stress, eating problems, chronic pain, addictions and living with long term health conditions. Many people struggle with painful thoughts, memories, feelings and sensations, and often believe that nothing can improve until they can make them go away. As they spend a lot of time and energy trying to do that, the long term effect can feel like a life on hold. In my therapy, I focus on helping people to learn new skills to bring their attention to the present moment, to take an open and compassionate stance towards their uncomfortable thoughts and feelings - so that they are less constrained by them. Step by step, the aim is to respond flexibly to stress and painful experiences and to be freer to live life to the full, in ways that really matter to the client.
